Development of Grimsvotn Eruption
South Iceland Marketing Office Advises Tourists to Monitor Development of Grimsvotn Eruption
Before Modifying Plans
- Eruption unlikely to have the same impact as Eyjafjallajokull in 2010.
Selfoss, Iceland — May 22, 2011 — The eruption at Grimsvotn volcano is not expected to be a big one and is already beginning to decline in strength, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. South Iceland Marketing Office advises tourists travelling to Iceland this summer to follow the situation closely and see how the eruption progresses before making changes to their travelling schedule.
David Samuelsson, General Manager at the South Iceland Marketing Office, advises tourists to monitor the situation over the next few days before making decisions: “It does not look like this will be a big eruption, and in fact it has already started to decline in strength,” said David. “We strongly advise tourists that have trips planned to Iceland this summer to wait and see the effects of this eruption before modifying their travel plans.”
The eruption is not expected to cause widespread disruption to air traffic. According to Pall Einarsson, geophysicist at the University of Iceland, the ash in Grimsvotn is coarser and not as likely to cause danger to air traffic as it falls to the ground faster and does not stay in the air as in the Eyjafjallajokull eruption.
